Sarah Palin rumors: What is going on here?
Seeing as I’ve been linked to off of Carlye’s blog, I’m gonna address this situation at hand concerning Sarah Palin, and the rumors circulating that her infant baby may in fact be her granddaughter. I’d like to start by saying that this may be the most inflammatory and sensational rumor I’ve ever heard, and the sheer magnitude of this story (and lack of hard evidence) require that I insist that, as of now, THIS IS ALL UNCONFIRMED, COMPLETE RUMOR. As such, with such extreme political and personal repercussions, it is inappropriate to discuss the validity of the charges. Nonetheless, some of the information involved raises some valid questions for discussion. If you’d like the full story, it can be found at dailykos.com, but here’s a brief summary:
As governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin announced in March 2008 that she was seven months pregnant. This was generally received as a total shock to her staff and citizens of Alaska because, frankly, her body wasn’t showing it. While rumors provide circumstantial evidence for why the baby may or may not be hers, I would like to focus on the nature of the birth of this child.
As Sarah Palin herself accounts, her water broke at 4 a.m. while she was in Texas as the keynote speaker of an energy conference. At this point, she chose to a) remain at the conference until noon-ish to give her speech, b) proceed to board an 8 hour flight from Dallas to Anchorage, with a stop-over in Seattle, and c) drive 45 minutes from Anchorage to the hospital where she had delivered her other 4 children. As a 44 year-old woman, giving birth to a Down Syndrome baby one month premature, it seems an egregious lack of judgment to set out on a 10-12 hour journey with the beginning signs of going into labor. Personally, this appears to be a highly dangerous decision for an expecting mother and her newborn child - not a rallying point of “toughness”, as I saw Gov. Palin describe it this weekend during an interview.
This seems to be the most legitimate and urgent issue which should be addressed by the Palin staff. What makes this situation all the more shocking is that I first heard about this highly politicized rumor from my highly unpoliticized sister Carlye. These are strange times we’re living in…
